Marie Antoinette’s Mirror

If you ever find yourself in South Dakota and visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial, be sure to take your time and explore the site. There’s a lot to see. The Sculptor’s Home and Studio are especially nice and packed with some unexpected items.

The sculptor, a fellow named Korczak Ziolkowski, lived in a tent for several months while he hand cut the trees for this cabin. He and his wife Ruth actually worked together, building the log structure and filling it with curiosities.

Many of these items were created by the artist himself but there’s a fair number of antiques too. My favorite piece is a mirror that was once owned by Marie Antoinette.

Just think. Sweaty old me, in my hiking clothes and clunky shoes that were covered in sand, stood before the very mirror that Marie Antoinette once gazed upon in all her elegance.

Don’t worry, I stayed calm and didn’t lose my head over it…. sorry, the pun….but thoroughly enjoyed the thought.
