Some people buy T-shirts and shot glasses on their travels.
I buy Christmas ornaments and books.
Honestly, nothing makes me happier than roaming around an independent bookstore on vacation, especially when it’s in a great building.
Tattered Cover Book Store is a Denver landmark and one of the best bookstores I’ve ever seen.
They’ve been in business since 1971, starting with one location and growing to several in the Denver area.
The selection is extensive and impressive. It’s also well organized and easy to navigate.
A handful of strategically placed chairs invite shoppers to linger and a greeter at the door is available to explain safety rules.
One thing that really sets them apart is that staff picks can be found throughout the store. These selections are identified by a card that explains why they recommend the book.
I wish every book store did this!

Love the ‘staff picks’ idea – I usually end up on spending half my time on Goodreads while in a bookstore.
I know! It was fantastic and a few were quite insightful.
I love bookstores especially the ones that sell used books.
Used stores are the best! This store was incredible because they basically had everything I’ve ever wanted to read and some things I didn’t know I wanted. 🙂
We have a wonderful independent bookstore here in Durango. Both in the store and on their website they offer staff picks. I’ve bought some of those and so far been pleased. I try to order most of my books through them. I think I visited the Tattered Cover on one of my visits to Denver – long ago.
It must be wonderful having a great bookstore like that in your own community. Lucky duck!!
Staff picks are usually a good bet but I truly appreciated how they tell you why they like something. Now I feel a bit spoiled. 🙂
Yeah, these staff picks don’t go into that much detail.
Nonetheless, it is a huge help having the recommendation!
Tattered Cover Book Store looks wonderful! (Not that it’s the anywhere near the same, but The Book Loft in German Village is great too.) Even though I doubt that I will ever make it to Denver to enjoy your “rare find” of a bookstore, I did make it to Tarlton to see the WPA bridge!! Whoopee!
I was thankful for the sunshine, a short walk, and getting to see something different, close to home! Thanks for another great tip.
I’m so glad you enjoyed that bridge! It really is a fun little treasure hiding in plain sight.
I was thinking this week that I need to find my way back to the Book Loft but there’s a stay at home order starting in Franklin County Friday. 😦
Thank you for sharing, what a great suggestion! Next time I’m in Denver I will have to seek it out. One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to find a local bookstore to support 😊
You’re welcome! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. The location pictured here is their lower downtown store but they have a few to choose from. Enjoy!!!
